Grayson, GA
County: Gwinnett
History
Grayson, Georgia, is a small city located in Gwinnett County. The area that is now Grayson was originally inhabited by the Creek and Cherokee Native Americans. European settlers began arriving in the late 18th century, primarily Scotch-Irish and German immigrants.
The town was originally known as Trip and officially became Grayson in 1901, named after James A. Grayson, a prominent local merchant who donated land to build a train depot. The railroad greatly contributed to the town's growth, allowing for easier transportation of goods and people.
Grayson remained a small agricultural community throughout most of its early history. Cotton was the primary crop, and the town had several cotton gins and a wood-burning sawmill. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Grayson also had a post office, general store, and a few churches and schools.
During the mid-20th century, with the rise of suburbanization, Grayson began to experience more growth and development. In the 1950s and 1960s, many residents started commuting to nearby Atlanta for work, leading to the construction of more housing subdivisions.
Incorporated as a city in 1909 with a population of approximately 200, Grayson's growth remained slow until the late 20th century. As the Atlanta metropolitan area expanded, so did the demand for housing in Grayson. The population began to boom in the 1990s and continued to grow rapidly into the 2000s.
With its small-town charm and proximity to major urban areas, Grayson has become an attractive place for families to settle down. The city has worked to preserve its historic downtown area while also accommodating new developments.
Today, Grayson is a thriving community with a population of over 3,000. It has a well-regarded school system, several parks, and a variety of local businesses. Despite its growth, Grayson maintains a strong sense of community and prides itself on its small-town atmosphere.
