History

Glenarden, Maryland

Glenarden, Maryland is a small city located in Prince George's County. The area that now constitutes Glenarden was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, most notably the Piscataway people.

European settlement in the area began in the 17th century, with the arrival of English colonists. Land grants were given to individuals, including George Atzerodt, who was later arrested and executed for his involvement in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. The Atzerodt family owned a large portion of the land that would eventually become the city of Glenarden.

The community of Glenarden began to develop in the early 20th century. In 1919, Arthur Mitchell and Charles Proctor purchased a plot of land with the intention of creating a racially integrated community. They named the area Glenarden after a combination of "glen," which refers to a small valley, and "arden," a Scottish word meaning "garden."

Mitchell and Proctor sold parcels of land to African Americans who were seeking housing opportunities outside of the crowded areas of Washington, D.C. Glenarden became a popular destination for African American families, and the community quickly grew. Many of the early residents were professionals, including educators, entrepreneurs, and government workers.

Glenarden was officially incorporated as a town in 1939. However, the town faced various challenges, such as limited infrastructure and social segregation, for several decades. Over time, the community was able to address these issues and make progress.

In 1996, Glenarden transitioned from a town to a city. Today, Glenarden is characterized by its diverse population and strong community spirit. The city has continued to grow and develop, with a focus on enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

Glenarden is also home to various local landmarks and institutions. The town center includes the Glenarden Community Center, which provides recreational facilities and programs for residents. Additionally, Glenarden hosts annual events, such as the Glenarden Arts Festival, to celebrate the vibrant culture of the city.
