Farmville, VA
County: Prince Edward
History
Farmville is a small town located in central Virginia, USA. Its history dates back to the early 18th century when the area was settled by English colonists. Originally known as "Farmersville," it was named after the many farms that surrounded the town.
In 1798, the town was officially established and renamed "Farmville." It quickly became a center of commerce due to its convenient location along the Appomattox River and the stagecoach routes that passed through the area. The town flourished with the growth of the tobacco industry in Virginia, as Farmville became a major trading and manufacturing center for the crop.
During the American Civil War, Farmville played a significant role in the final days of the conflict. In April 1865, General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate Army reached Farmville during their retreat from Petersburg, just a few weeks before the surrender at Appomattox Court House. The Battle of High Bridge took place nearby, as Union and Confederate forces clashed for control of the vital High Bridge over the Appomattox River.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Farmville developed as an educational hub with the establishment of several schools. Longwood University, originally a female seminary, was founded in 1839, and in 1884, Hampden-Sydney College, a prestigious all-male liberal arts college, relocated to the outskirts of Farmville.
One of the most significant events in Farmville's history occurred in 1951 when the town witnessed a landmark civil rights case known as "Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County." This case became a part of the wider Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, which declared segregation in public schools unconstitutional. The resistance to desegregation by the County Board of Education prompted a five-year closure of public schools in Prince Edward County, earning it the nickname "The Lost Generation."
In recent years, Farmville has retained its charm as a small, historic town while also embracing growth and development. It boasts a thriving downtown area with unique shops and restaurants that attract both locals and visitors. The town's historical significance is celebrated through various historical markers, museums, and annual events.
Today, Farmville continues to honor its agricultural roots while offering a mix of historical preservation, educational institutions, and a sense of community.
