History

Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania

Fairless Hills is a suburban community located in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The area where Fairless Hills is situated was once open farmland until the early 1950s when U.S. Steel Corporation purchased the land and constructed a massive steel plant. The plant, known as the Fairless Works, quickly became one of the largest steel mills in the country.

The town of Fairless Hills was planned and built by U.S. Steel Corporation to accommodate the growing workforce of the steel plant. Construction of the town began in 1951 and was completed in 1953. Fairless Hills was named after Benjamin Fairless, the president of U.S. Steel Corporation at that time.

The community was designed to provide not only housing for the steel plant workers but also a range of amenities and services such as schools, shopping centers, parks, and recreational facilities. The town was envisioned as a self-sufficient and idyllic suburban environment.

During its early years, Fairless Hills experienced rapid growth as the steel industry thrived. The steel plant provided numerous employment opportunities, attracting workers from all around the country. The town's population increased steadily, and it quickly became a thriving community.

However, by the 1970s, the American steel industry began to decline due to increased foreign competition and domestic economic factors. U.S. Steel Corporation faced financial difficulties, and the Fairless Works steel plant was eventually shut down in 1991.

Despite the closure of the steel plant, Fairless Hills has continued to develop and grow as a residential community. Today, it is a thriving suburban area with a population of approximately 8,000 residents. The town has a diverse range of housing options, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

Fairless Hills is known for its well-maintained parks and green spaces, including the popular Falls Township Community Park and Fairless Hills Athletic Association field complex. The community also has a strong sense of civic pride, with various community organizations and events that bring residents together.

In terms of education, Fairless Hills is served by the Pennsbury School District, which includes several public elementary, middle, and high schools. The town also has a public library and is within close proximity to higher education institutions in the region.
