County: San Diego
History
Fairbanks Ranch is an exclusive residential community located in the city of San Diego, California. The history of Fairbanks Ranch dates back to the early 20th century and is closely tied to the history of the Fairbanks family, who played a significant role in its development.
In the early 1900s, Sherman Fairbanks, a businessman from Chicago, purchased a large plot of land in what is now Fairbanks Ranch. He intended to develop it into a thoroughbred horse ranch. However, due to financial difficulties, Sherman's plans were put on hold, and the land remained undeveloped for several years.
Sherman's son, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., a renowned actor, later acquired the property. Douglas, along with Mary Pickford, his wife and a famous actress, used the ranch as a getaway from the hectic Hollywood lifestyle. They stayed in a Spanish-style home on the property and enjoyed the natural beauty of the area.
In the 1950s, the Fairbanks family decided to develop the ranch into a planned community. They enlisted the help of master planner Ray Watt, who designed a residential area with an emphasis on preserving the natural landscape. Watt's design included over 600 custom home sites spread across 1,240 acres. The community was named Fairbanks Ranch in honor of the family.
Development of the community began in the 1980s, and the first homes were completed in 1982. The community quickly became a highly desirable place to live due to its exclusivity, privacy, and beautiful surroundings, attracting affluent residents.
Today, Fairbanks Ranch is regarded as one of the most prestigious and luxurious communities in San Diego County. It offers a variety of amenities, including an equestrian center, a lake with fishing and boating opportunities, tennis courts, walking trails, and highly regarded horse stables. The community is known for its large estate homes, custom-built residences, and meticulously landscaped properties.
Fairbanks Ranch remains a popular choice for those seeking a high-end, secluded lifestyle in San Diego. Its rich history, coupled with its exceptional amenities and natural beauty, continues to attract residents who appreciate the elegance and tranquility of this exclusive community.
