History

Evergreen, Montana

Evergreen, Montana is a small community located in Flathead County in the northwestern part of the state. The history of Evergreen begins with the arrival of European settlers in the late 19th century.

The area was initially used by Native American tribes, including the Flathead and Kootenai tribes, who would hunt and fish in the region. In 1855, the Treaty of Hellgate was signed, which opened up the area for homesteading and settlement.

However, it wasn't until the late 1800s that permanent settlement began in Evergreen. The arrival of the Great Northern Railroad in 1891 played a crucial role in the town's development, as it provided a means of transporting goods and people in and out of the area. This led to increased economic activity and population growth.

The town was named Evergreen due to the lush green forests that surrounded the area. The timber industry became a significant part of the local economy, with logging and sawmills thriving in the early 20th century. The abundant natural resources attracted many settlers, particularly those involved in the logging and lumber industries.

During this time, Evergreen also served as a supply center for nearby mining towns. The neighboring community of Columbia Falls flourished as a result of the nearby mining operations, and Evergreen benefited from its close proximity.

Over the years, Evergreen continued to grow and develop. In the 1950s, the construction of the Hungry Horse Dam on the South Fork of the Flathead River provided additional opportunities for economic growth and tourism in the area.

Today, Evergreen remains a small but vibrant community, with a population of around 6,000 residents. It offers a variety of recreational activities due to its proximity to Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, and the surrounding mountains.

Despite being close to more populous cities such as Kalispell and Whitefish, Evergreen maintains its distinct rural character and tight-knit community feel. The town's history, which is deeply intertwined with the region's natural resources and infrastructure development, is still visible in its landmarks, buildings, and community traditions.
