Ellsworth, Kansas is a small city located in Ellsworth County, in the central part of the state. The history of Ellsworth goes back to the mid-19th century when it was established as a trading post along the Smoky Hill Trail.

In the early 1860s, the Smoky Hill Trail became an important route for travelers and freight wagons heading west to Colorado and the gold fields. With the increasing traffic along the trail, a trading post was established by Valentine D. Horn and named "El Dorado." However, due to another town already bearing the same name, the post office suggested the name be changed to Ellsworth in honor of the fort of the same name in Maine, in order to prevent any confusion.

As Ellsworth developed as a trading post, it attracted many settlers and businesses. In 1867, it became the first seat of Ellsworth County, which was established that same year.
