History

Elko New Market, Minnesota

Elko New Market is a small city located in Scott County, Minnesota. The history of the area dates back to the mid-1800s when settlers began to arrive in the region.

The first settlement in the area was known as Helena. It was founded by German and Irish immigrants in 1855. The settlers were attracted to the fertile soil and the proximity to the Minnesota River. They primarily engaged in farming and trading.

In 1856, a group of settlers from Philadelphia purchased 200 acres of land east of Helena, which later became known as Elko. The name "Elko" was derived from a Native American word meaning "place of friendship."

Elko started to grow as more settlers arrived, and it soon became a thriving community. The town had a post office, a school, churches, and various businesses. The primary industry in Elko was agriculture, with farming and dairy farming being the main source of income for many residents.

In 1878, a railroad line was built connecting Elko to the rest of Minnesota, further boosting the growth and development of the town. The railroad facilitated transportation of goods and opened up new markets for local products.

In the early 1900s, New Market, which was located to the south of Elko, also began to develop. The town was originally called "Pierceville," but it was later renamed "New Market" due to its location near a historic market square. New Market mainly relied on agriculture and had its own school and businesses.

Eventually, Elko and New Market merged to form the city of Elko New Market in 2007. This consolidation allowed the two communities to pool their resources and unify their efforts for future development.

Today, Elko New Market is a small but growing city with a population of approximately 4,500 people. While agriculture still plays a significant role in the local economy, the city has also seen growth in various other sectors such as manufacturing and small businesses.

The history of Elko New Market is celebrated by its residents, who take pride in their community's heritage. The Elko New Market Historical Society works to preserve and share the stories and artifacts of the area's past, ensuring that the history of the city is not forgotten.
