East Riverdale, MD
County: Prince George's
History
East Riverdale, Maryland is a small community located in Prince George's County. The area that is now East Riverdale was originally home to Native American tribes, including the Piscataway people. European settlers arrived in the 17th century, and over time, the area became part of large plantations.
In the late 19th century, the development of railroads brought significant changes to East Riverdale. The Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway (WB&A) began operating in the area, connecting Washington, D.C. to Baltimore, Maryland. This new transportation link encouraged residential development along the railway line, including in East Riverdale.
During the early 20th century, East Riverdale experienced further growth as more people moved to the area attracted by the accessibility to larger cities. The WB&A railway served as a catalyst for suburbanization, and many houses were built to accommodate the increasing population. The construction of Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) in the 1920s also facilitated transportation and further development in the community.
The arrival of World War II brought additional changes to East Riverdale. The proximity to Washington, D.C. and the need for defense workers led to the rapid construction of temporary housing to accommodate these workers. After the war, many of these temporary structures were transformed into permanent homes, contributing to the growth of the community.
Over the latter half of the 20th century, East Riverdale continued to evolve. The establishment of the East Riverdale-University Park Fire Department in 1952 became an essential service for the residents. Operations and activities in East Riverdale were further enhanced by the construction of the East Riverdale Recreation Center in 1968, providing recreational facilities to the community.
Today, East Riverdale remains a residential community with a diverse population. It has access to various amenities and is conveniently located near major highways, making it an attractive place for families and commuters. Despite urbanization and changes over the years, East Riverdale has managed to maintain its small-town feel and sense of community.
