History

Dundee, Florida

Dundee is a small town located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The history of Dundee dates back to the late 19th century when the area was primarily inhabited by Native Americans. The town was named after Dundee, Scotland, by two Scottish businessmen who played a key role in its establishment.

In 1883, Alexander A. McKintosh and J.A. Hendry, both Scottish entrepreneurs, purchased large tracts of land in the vicinity of present-day Dundee. They envisioned the area as an ideal location for growing citrus due to its fertile soil and favorable climate. Together, they founded the Dundee Fruit Company and started developing the town.

The town of Dundee was officially incorporated in 1924. The citrus industry flourished during the early 20th century, making Dundee a prominent and prosperous community. The introduction of the railroad in the area further facilitated the transportation of citrus fruits, boosting the local economy.

However, like many other citrus-growing regions in Florida, Dundee faced hardships in the mid-20th century. Devastating freezes in the 1980s and the spread of citrus diseases significantly impacted the industry, leading to a decline in orange groves and associated businesses. Many citrus farmers were forced to switch to other crops or pursue different economic activities.

Despite the challenges, Dundee has managed to maintain its small-town charm and farming heritage. Today, the town's economy is primarily based on agriculture, including citrus cultivation and cattle farming. Its proximity to larger cities like Winter Haven and Haines City also contributes to its economic viability.

Over the years, Dundee has seen modest growth in terms of population and infrastructure development. The town has preserved some of its historic structures, such as the Old Dundee Depot, which now serves as a historical museum and community center.

Dundee continues to be a close-knit community with a rich agricultural history. It celebrates its heritage through events like the Dundee Citrus Growers Association Heritage Day, which showcases the town's agricultural traditions and pays homage to its pioneers.
