Dowagiac is a city located in Cass County, Michigan. The area initially belonged to the Potawatomi Native American tribe until the 1820s, when European settlers started arriving. The city's name, Dowagiac, is derived from the Potawatomi term "Do-wah-jig," meaning "fishing water" or "where the waters are trapped."

In the mid-19th century, Dowagiac experienced a significant growth spurt due to the establishment of sawmills, an iron foundry, and a gristmill.
