Diboll, TX
County: Angelina
History
Diboll is a small city located in Angelina County, Texas. Its history can be traced back to the early 20th century when Thomas Lewis Latane Temple and his brother, Arthur Temple, established a sawmill in the area.
In 1894, Thomas Temple purchased a small 8,000-acre tract of land, which included the future site of Diboll. He saw the potential for the timber industry in the area, as the East Texas region was rich in pine forests. Thomas and Arthur established the Southern Pine Lumber Company and built a sawmill to process the timber.
The town of Diboll was named after Thomas Temple's mother, Sarah D. Diboll. She was a prominent figure in the community and the wife of Louis J. Diboll, a successful lumberman. The town was officially incorporated in 1903.
Under the leadership of Thomas Temple, the Southern Pine Lumber Company expanded rapidly. The company's success brought prosperity to Diboll, attracting workers from around the region. The population grew, and the town developed essential infrastructure such as schools, churches, and businesses.
The Temple family played a significant role in shaping the community. They not only provided employment through the lumber company but also established initiatives to improve the quality of life for residents. They built houses for their workers, developed recreational facilities, and implemented educational programs.
Over the years, the Southern Pine Lumber Company became one of the largest sawmills in the United States. It played a crucial role in the development of the timber industry in East Texas, contributing to the economic growth of the region.
In the late 1960s, the Temple family sold the Southern Pine Lumber Company to the Temple-Eastex Corporation. However, the company's impact on the town remained strong. Today, Diboll is often referred to as the "Gateway to the Texas Forest Country" due to its close association with the timber industry.
While the lumber industry continues to play an essential role in Diboll's economy, the town has diversified its economic base. Other industries, such as manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare, have emerged, contributing to the overall growth and stability of the community.
Diboll preserves its unique history through several historical landmarks and museums. The History Center Museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and documents that capture the town's heritage. Additionally, the Diboll Depot Museum highlights the importance of the railroad industry in the area.
