DeCordova, TX
County: Hood
History
DeCordova, Texas is a small city located in Hood County, about 52 miles southwest of downtown Fort Worth. The history of DeCordova dates back to the mid-19th century when the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche and Kiowa.
In 1855, Major Ripley Allen Arnold bought a large tract of land in the area and established a plantation known as Weldon, named after his hometown in North Carolina. The plantation was centered around a two-story house built of local limestone, which still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
During the Civil War, the area around DeCordova experienced brief conflicts between Confederate and Union troops. The nearby Brazos River, which runs through DeCordova, played a significant role in providing transportation for goods and crops.
In the late 1860s, the Texas and Pacific Railway was constructed, passing through the area. The railroad brought economic development and growth to the region, including the establishment of a small depot near the present-day location of DeCordova. The settlement that formed around the depot was initially called Aston, named after a railroad company official. However, in 1974, the settlement was officially incorporated as DeCordova, named after Paul DeCordova, a former president of the Texas and Pacific Railway.
Over the years, DeCordova grew steadily, attracting residents who were drawn to the city's natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Today, DeCordova is home to approximately 3,500 residents and offers a mix of residential areas, recreational facilities, and local businesses.
The city is known for its proximity to Lake Granbury, a reservoir created by the damming of the Brazos River. The lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and water sports. Additionally, DeCordova is situated near several golf courses and parks, providing residents with ample opportunities for outdoor activities.
In recent years, DeCordova has experienced ongoing residential and commercial development, reflecting the growth of the surrounding region. Despite these changes, DeCordova has managed to maintain its small-town charm and sense of community. The city continues to attract both permanent residents and visitors alike, drawn to its scenic location and relaxed atmosphere.
