Cold Spring, MN
County: Stearns
History
Cold Spring is a small city located in Stearns County, Minnesota, United States. The area was originally inhabited by Dakota and Ojibwe Native American tribes. The city's name, Cold Spring, comes from the natural spring located within the area, which remains cold even during warm seasons.
The first European settlers arrived in the mid-1850s, primarily of German descent. These early pioneers established a farming community and quickly realized the area's potential. In 1856, a sawmill was constructed near the spring, providing lumber for the growing community. The mill, combined with the fertile soil, attracted more settlers to the area.
In 1857, a group of Catholics led by Father Francis Xavier Pierz arrived and established a mission near the spring. The mission's church, known as St. Boniface, was completed in 1867 and still stands today. The arrival of the Catholic community significantly influenced the development of Cold Spring, leading to the establishment of schools, hospitals, and other institutions to serve the growing population.
The city continued to flourish throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The construction of Cold Spring Granite Company in 1898 marked a significant turning point for the city's economy. The company quarried granite from nearby quarries, providing jobs and expanding the city's infrastructure. Cold Spring granite was used in various prominent structures, including the Minnesota State Capitol and the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.
However, the city faced a tragic event on September 24, 2003, when a shooting occurred at Rocori High School. Two students were killed in the incident, making national headlines. The incident deeply impacted the community, but Cold Spring came together to support one another during the difficult times.
Since then, the city has continued to grow and modernize while retaining its small-town charm. Cold Spring's economy diversified beyond quarrying, and industries such as manufacturing, agriculture, and retail have become significant contributors. The city is known for its natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and strong sense of community.
Today, Cold Spring remains a vibrant city with a population of around 4,000 residents. The city's rich history, exemplified by its heritage and resilient spirit, is celebrated and preserved through local museums, historical sites, and community events.
