Clarinda is a city located in Page County, Iowa, United States. It was founded in 1851 by H. J. Shambaugh, making it one of the first settled communities in southwestern Iowa. The city was originally named Glenwood, but confusion with another town of the same name led to a name change to Clarinda in 1853.
The early settlers of Clarinda were primarily of European descent, migrating from states like Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. The town quickly grew as the fertile land attracted farmers and the proximity to the Nodaway River provided a source of water and transportation. The construction of railroads in the late 19th century further facilitated growth and economic development.
One of Clarinda's notable historical figures is the author and journalist William S. Burroughs, born in the city in 1914. Burroughs went on to become a prominent figure of the Beat Generation and wrote influential works such as the novel "Naked Lunch."

The state hospital, now known as Clarinda Academy, was established in 1884, becoming a major employer and contributing to the local economy. Clarinda also became known for its music education program. In 1919, Frederick Maurice and Will Earhart established the Clarinda Municipal Band, which gained national recognition and performed at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. The band's success led to the establishment of the Iowa band camp in Clarinda, attracting musicians from across the state.
Over the years, Clarinda has faced challenges, including economic downturns and natural disasters. However, the city has managed to maintain its character and charm through community involvement and revitalization efforts.
Today, Clarinda is a small but vibrant community, with a population of approximately 5,000 residents.
