History

Centralia, Missouri

Centralia, Missouri is a small city located in Boone County, in the central part of the state. Its history dates back to the early 1800s when the area was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and Missouri tribes. European settlers began arriving in the area in the early 19th century, attracted by the fertile land and abundant natural resources.

Centralia was officially founded in 1857, although it was initially named "Allen's Landing" after David Allen, one of the early settlers in the area. The city was later renamed Centralia due to its central location in Missouri. The opening of the North Missouri Railroad in 1857 greatly facilitated transportation and commerce, leading to the city's rapid growth.

During the American Civil War, Centralia found itself in the midst of the conflict. In 1864, a group of Confederate guerrillas led by William Quantrill attacked the town and engaged in a Battle of Centralia, which resulted in the death of many Union soldiers. This event became known as the Centralia Massacre and is an important part of the city's history.

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Centralia continued to develop, mainly as a farming and mining community. It became an important hub for agricultural trade, with numerous grain elevators and storage facilities. The city also saw the establishment of various industries, including brick plants, milling companies, and a large shoe factory.

In the mid-20th century, the economy took a hit as the agricultural sector declined and many manufacturing jobs were lost. However, the city has managed to maintain its small-town atmosphere and adapt to changing times. Today, Centralia's economy is diverse, with a mix of small businesses, service industries, and agricultural enterprises.

Centralia is also known for its strong community spirit and its dedication to preserving its history. The city features several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Centralia Battlefield, which commemorates the Battle of Centralia. The Centralia Area Historical Society works to preserve and promote the city's heritage through various initiatives.

In recent years, Centralia's population has grown steadily, and the city continues to strive for economic development and community improvement while preserving its rich history.
