History

Centerton, Arkansas

Centerton, Arkansas is a small city located in Benton County in the northwest corner of the state. The area that is now Centerton was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Osage and Cherokee. European settlers began to arrive in the 1800s and established a small community.

In 1834, a post office was established in the area known as "New Springs," which was later renamed Centerton. The town began to thrive with the construction of a flour mill in 1854 and the opening of the Butterfield Overland Mail route in 1858, which brought increased traffic and economic opportunities to the region.

During the American Civil War, Centerton became a center of conflict. The Battle of Bushong's Mill, one of the largest Civil War skirmishes in northwest Arkansas, took place near Centerton in 1862. After the war, the town rebuilt and continued to grow, with the railroad reaching Centerton in the late 1800s, further boosting its economy.

Centerton remained a small agricultural community for much of its history, known for its apple and peach orchards. In the early 1900s, the town experienced a decline due to the boll weevil infestation and the Great Depression. However, it rebounded in the mid-20th century as the world's largest poultry producer, Tyson Foods, established a processing plant nearby, bringing much-needed jobs and economic stability to the area.

In the late 20th century, Centerton experienced significant population growth, as it became an attractive residential area for those seeking a suburban lifestyle near larger cities like Bentonville and Fayetteville. As a result, the city's population has more than doubled since the turn of the century.

Today, Centerton is a rapidly growing city that maintains its small-town charm and agricultural heritage while benefiting from its proximity to major economic centers like Bentonville, which is home to Walmart's headquarters. The city continues to attract new residents and businesses, contributing to its ongoing development and expansion.
