History

Canton, Texas

Canton, Texas is a small city located in Van Zandt County in East Texas. The history of Canton dates back to the mid-19th century when it was initially settled by pioneers.

The area that is now Canton was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Caddo and Cherokee peoples, before the arrival of European settlers. In the 1840s, the Texas Legislature established Van Zandt County, and Canton became the county seat in 1850.

The town of Canton was named after Canton, China, by early settler and trader W.C. Smith, who had previously visited the Chinese city. The name was chosen in the hope that Canton, Texas would become a trading center similar to its namesake.

Canton quickly grew into a thriving and prosperous community due to its location on the Texas & Pacific Railway line, which was completed in 1873. The railroad brought an influx of settlers, businesses, and economic opportunities to the area.

One of the significant events in Canton's history is the Great Fire of 1883. The fire destroyed much of the downtown area, including the courthouse, businesses, and homes. However, the determined residents rebuilt the town, and by the late 1880s, Canton was once again a bustling community.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Canton became a hub for agricultural trade, particularly for cotton. It was a primary shipping point for the surrounding farming community, and local businesses thrived as a result.

The city gained national recognition in the 1960s when the Canton Flea Market was established. Beginning with a handful of vendors, the market grew into one of the largest and most popular flea markets in the country. Today, the First Monday Trade Days, as it is known, attracts millions of visitors each year, providing a significant economic boost to the area.

Throughout its history, Canton has preserved its small-town charm while embracing growth and development. Today, the city remains a thriving community, attracting tourists, retirees, and families alike. Canton's rich history is celebrated through its various historic sites, including the downtown square, Victorian homes, and the Van Zandt County Courthouse, which was rebuilt after the Great Fire.
