History

California, Maryland

California, Maryland is a small unincorporated community located in St. Mary's County, Maryland. The history of California, MD dates back to the early colonial period when European settlers began to explore and settle in the region.

The area where California, MD stands today was once inhabited by the Native American Yaocomaco tribe. However, with the arrival of English settlers in the 17th century, the Native American population declined rapidly due to conflict and disease.

During the 18th century, the area that would become California, MD was primarily agricultural land. Farmers cultivated tobacco, corn, and other crops, and the region's economy depended largely on agriculture.

In 1839, a steamboat landing was established in California, MD, along the Patuxent River. This led to increased commerce and trade in the area, as steamboats provided transport for goods and passengers.

The community was originally named "Bristol" after Bristol, England, the birthplace of the area's first postmaster. However, in 1888, the community's name was changed to California, as a reference to the West Coast state of California. The reason for the name change is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have been influenced by the California Gold Rush era, which occurred in the mid-19th century.

In the early 20th century, California, MD continued its agricultural tradition; however, with the construction of naval bases in nearby Solomons Island and Patuxent River, the economy began to shift towards supporting the military presence in the region. This led to an increase in population and the development of businesses catering to the needs of the military personnel and their families.

Today, California, MD is a residential and commercial community located along Maryland Route 235. It has grown significantly over the years, with new residential neighborhoods, shopping centers, and recreational facilities being established. California, MD continues to be an important part of St. Mary's County, with its proximity to the naval installations and the natural beauty of the Patuxent River.
