European settlement began in the 1730s when Swedish colonists established a homestead in what is now known as the Hay Creek Valley. The furnace produced pig iron, which was integral for the growing industrialization in the United States. The local community grew around the iron furnace, creating jobs, and attracting immigrants from various European countries.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Birdsboro continued to thrive and witnessed further industrial growth. The town's economy expanded beyond iron production to include coal mining, the manufacturing of textiles, brickmaking, and papermaking. The Reading Railroad also played a significant role in Birdsboro's development, connecting the town with other major industrial centers.
Throughout its history, Birdsboro faced several challenges, including economic downturns, natural disasters, and the decline of the iron and coal industries. However, the town managed to adapt and diversify its economy over time.
Today, Birdsboro is a small borough with a population of around 5,200. While it retains some of its industrial heritage, the town has also focused on revitalization and promoting tourism.
