Beaver Falls, PA
County: Beaver
History
Beaver Falls is a city located in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, United States. The area where Beaver Falls now stands was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and the Delaware Indians. European settlement began in the late 18th century, with the establishment of Fort McIntosh by American forces during the American Revolution in 1778.
One of the prominent figures in the history of Beaver Falls is Thomas H. Powers, a Revolutionary War veteran. In 1802, Powers purchased land in the area and built a gristmill, establishing the beginnings of a settlement. The town was officially founded in 1805, named after the powerful waterfall on the Beaver River that flows through the area.
During the 19th century, Beaver Falls experienced significant industrial growth. The Beaver Division Canal, completed in 1834, connected the town to the Ohio River, allowing for transportation of goods and materials. This led to the rapid expansion of industries such as manufacturing, tanning, and glassmaking in the region. The completion of the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1850s further enhanced the town's economic development.
The most influential industry in Beaver Falls, however, was the steel industry. In 1901, the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation (J&L Steel) established a large manufacturing plant in the city, which brought thousands of jobs and prosperity to the area. J&L Steel became a major employer in Beaver Falls and played a vital role in the city's growth and economic stability throughout the 20th century.
Beaver Falls also played a significant role in the field of education. In 1869, Joseph Tibby built a school for African American students, which later became Geneva College in 1883. The college became a vital institution in the region, offering higher education opportunities for local residents and contributing to the intellectual and cultural life of Beaver Falls.
Over the years, Beaver Falls faced economic challenges due to the decline of the steel industry and the closure of J&L Steel in 1979. The city has since focused on revitalization efforts, including the development of recreational facilities and the promotion of small businesses, to stimulate economic growth and improve the quality of life for its residents.
Today, Beaver Falls remains a vibrant community with a population of around 8,900 residents. The city continues to evolve and adapt, preserving its historical heritage while embracing new opportunities for growth and development.
