Bayshore, NC
County: New Hanover
History

Bayshore is a small coastal community located on the southern tip of Topsail Island in North Carolina. The history of Bayshore dates back to the early 20th century when it was first developed as a beach resort destination.
In the early 1900s, developers saw the potential of the pristine beaches and natural beauty of Topsail Island, and they began to purchase large tracts of land for development. The area was initially known as Banks Channel Beach and was sparsely populated with a few fishing shacks.
The development of Bayshore as a resort community began in the 1920s when a group of businessmen from Wilmington, North Carolina, formed the Bayshore Development Company. They aimed to create an upscale beachfront community that would attract wealthy tourists from nearby cities. The developers built a pier, a casino, and a dance hall, along with a small number of luxurious beachfront cottages.
However, the Great Depression in the 1930s halted further development of Bayshore, and the community remained relatively small and undeveloped for several decades. The area was primarily used by local fishermen and summer vacationers.
In the 1960s and 1970s, the popularity of Topsail Island as a vacation destination grew, and Bayshore experienced renewed interest from developers and tourists. With the construction of the high-rise Surf City Bridge, which connected Topsail Island to the mainland, access to the island became easier, and tourism boomed.
Over the years, Bayshore has seen increased development and urbanization, with more beach houses, rental properties, and businesses being established. The area is known for its beautiful sandy beaches, fishing opportunities, and outdoor recreational activities.
Bayshore, along with the rest of Topsail Island, suffered significant damage during Hurricane Fran in 1996 and Hurricane Florence in 2018. However, the community has rebuilt and remains a popular destination for beachgoers and nature enthusiasts.
Today, Bayshore continues to be a peaceful coastal community, offering a blend of vacation homes, year-round residents, and a vibrant tourism industry. It is a place where visitors and locals alike can enjoy the natural beauty and relaxed atmosphere of the North Carolina coast.
