History
Albert Lea, Minnesota is a small city located in Freeborn County. The area that is now Albert Lea was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, particularly the Dakota Sioux and Winnebago tribes. European settlement began in the mid-19th century.
The city is named after Albert Miller Lea, a colonel in the United States Army Corps of Engineers who surveyed the area in 1835. The original settlement was established by Henry L. Sibley, a pioneer and fur trader, in 1855. It quickly grew and became an important trading post on the Shell Rock River.
In 1858, Albert Lea officially became a township, and a year later, in 1859, it was platted and officially incorporated as a city. The city's location on the Shell Rock River made it an ideal spot for water-powered mills, which led to its early economic development.
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, several industries flourished in Albert Lea, including flour mills, lumber mills, and agricultural production.
